Burn Injury
Findings:
Surface shaded 3-D CT reconstructions and bone reconstructed CT images demonstrate large externally communicating bony defects in the anterior walls of both frontal sinuses, associated with overlying soft tissue loss including loss of anterior nasal soft tissues, truncation of the anterior nasal bones, and imperceptible thickness of the scalp soft tissue.
Differential Diagnosis/Discussion:
Initially, this has the appearance of a technologist error with clipping of data from the periphery. The differential diagnosis for osteolysis is broad, but if also associated with soft tissue loss, previous full thickness tissue necrosis and sloughing should be considered. This type of severe tissue damage may be caused by chemical, thermal (burn or frostbite), or electrical injury, versus traumatic amputation.
