Hamartoma
Findings:
Multiple MR images demonstrate a well circumscribed signal abnormality in the interior left insula region, with no abnormal enhancement or significant mass effect. The lesion contains a central T2 hyperintense zone, and is otherwise moderately T2 hyperintense.
Differential Diagnosis/Discussion:
A well-defined nonenhancing intraaxial mass has the differential diagnosis of low-grade glial neoplasm, hamartoma, and large tumefactive demyelinating lesion. The appearance and location of this lesion is unusual for a focus of demyelination, but there is no feature of this mass that precisely distinguishes it between neoplasm and hamartoma. Lack of significant mass effect indicates that neoplasm is unlikely.
