T1 burst fracture

Findings:

Sagittal and axial CT images with bone reconstruction demonstrate a comminuted burst fracture of T1 associated with a coronal cleft and paravertebral soft tissue swelling. Additional fracture involves the left C7 lamina extending into the base of the spinous process.

Discussion:

Burst fractures are charcterized by three column involvement and instability resulting from high energy axial loading. Important considerations include degree of height loss, spinal canal compromise, and cord injury. Epidural hematoma may also be seen.
