R TMJ Disc Posterior Subluxation

Findings:

Multiple MRI images focused on the TM joints demonstrate abnormal posterior position of the right articular disc compared to the left side. The images are obtained in the closed mouth position, with slight anterior translation of the right mandibular condyle due to the disc located posteriorly.

Discussion:

In the closed mouth position, the posterior band of the TMJ articular disc should be located near the 12 o’clock position of the mandibular condyle. With mouth opening, the mandibular condyle glides over the articular disc and rests near the 6 o’clock position of the articular eminence. The TMJ disc should become relatively horizontally oriented with open mouth positioning. Other case and discussion of TMJ disc pathology is found below:
